RUGBY SOUTH CANTERBURY UNION

Season Opens On May 4 The difficulties facing country football teams as a result of the I petrol restrictions vere emphasised | by the Temuka Rugby Football Club lin a letter to the South Canterbury Union last evening. The letter pointed out the handicap faced by a country club with two or three teams travelling each week and asked whether the Union could secure extra petrol for sports bodies or interview the Oil Controller with that end in view. The chairman (Mr S. H. Sullivan) said that the question of securing concessions for football teams forced to travel was one of the matters which the Union had decided to take up with the New Zealand Union and suggested that instructions on the lines of the request be forwarded to the Union's delegates. Mr J. H. Harley suggested that the motion include a request that the New Zealand Union should do more for country football. He contended that action in that direction was essential for the welfare of football generally. The major Unions with large revenue from representative matches were in a position to assist their country centres, mt a union like South Canterbury could not do much outside its own players. A motion on the lines of the discussion was adopted. Club Competitions rive opening date of the club competitions was set down for May 4. entries to close on April 20. It was decided to call entries for all grades as last year and to review the position when entries were to hand. Conditions for a new sixth grade competition were drawn up to be submitted to clubs and secondary schools for approval. An application from the Timaru Old Boys’ Club for the use of Fraser Park for training on Tuesday n'.hts was p-'-ntod. Wednesday night was allocated to the Zingari Club and Thursday to Star. The use of grounds at Fraser Park for friendly matches with visiting teams were granted as follows:—April 13, Zingari, No. 1 ground, Star No. 2 ground; April 20. Star No. 1 ground. Messrs J- H. Harley and H. Murphy were appointed the South Canterbury delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union. Nominations for officers on the New Zealand Union were held over pending inform- j ation from the major South Island Unions. Admission Charges After a discussion on the admission charges to Fraser Park for club matches, the meeting decided to maintain the charge of 1/- at the gate, ! but to make no extra charge for 1 admission to the stand. “That decision will not commit us I for the whole season,” commented the ! chairman. The meeting was attended by Messrs S. H. Sullivan (chairman), A. C. Rippin, J. H. Harley, G. Adkins, K. O’Halloran, D. J. Hewitt, J. Davey, A. W. Ellis, G. McDonald and C. W. Keinan.
