CLAIM FOR £20,000
Land Taken for Aerodrome By Telegraph—Press Association BLENHEIM, April 8. More than £20,000 is being claimed from the Government by the owner of the Woodbourne Estate, Mr G. M. M. Fairhall, as compensation for taking it as a site for the flying training school. Mr Justice Smith, with two assessors, Mr Errol Reid, of Blenheim, for the claimant, and Mr Albert Freeman, of Christchurch, for the Crown, will hear the case, which opens to-morrow. The case comprises two separate claims, one arising from the taking of the area in October, 1935. for a defence aerodrome project, which was subsequently abandoned and the land restored to the owner in June, 1937. In this connection the sum of £1394 is claimed. In February, 1939, the Government decided to proceed with the establishment of an aerodrome, and for the land taken the owner seeks compensation totalling £18,740. In reply the Government offers £6OOO as full settlement.
Mr O. C. Mazengarb, of Wellington, will represent the claimant, and Mr W. T. Churchward, of Blenheim, the Crown.
