£l5OO Transferred To Reserve Fund * Council Decision A decision to transfer £l5OO of the funds of the Municipal Electricity Department to a capital reserve accoum was made at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night. In reference to the matter the borough accountant, Mr R. Jordan, reported : “The Council resolved on June 6, 1939, that provided the cash position of the electricity account was approximately as estimated that £l5OO be placed to a capital reserve account. The estimated credit balance was £3775 and the credit on March 31 was £2956 being £Bl9 short of the estimated balance. I have discussed the position with the electrical engineer and am of the opinion that after transferring the £l5OO to a reserve fund there should be sufficient revenue to meet the requirements of the department for the current year.” The Council resolved that the amount of £l5OO be transferred to the reserve fund and that the matter of the amount to be received from the sale of the cable to the Public Works Department.be referred for consideration with the estimates with a view to it being dealt with in the same manner. Electricity Committee The committee reported, inter alia, as follows: Reconditioning main 11 K.V. line.— Resolved that action be taken in accordance with the final paragraph of the Public Works Department’s letter, and that the matter be left to the chairman, Cr. Hart, and electrical engineer, Mr A. E. Watkins, and Town Clerk to act. Absence on military service.—The electrical engineer recommends that Mr J. Barnard be granted leave of absence, and that Mr A. Wills, relief meter reader and salesman, take over the meter reading. Finance Committee The Finance Committee recommended, inter alia: Street Days: The following are the days granted last year, and applications made for this year: Last year: R.S.A. (Poppy Day, April 14, this year April 19; Mary Raymond District Nurse, August 25, August 30; Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A., September 22, September 20; St. John Ambulance, Oct., October 18; Plunket Society. November 17, November 15; Sailors’ Rest and St. Saviour’s OrphanageRecommended that the days applied for be granted. Reserves Committee The Reserves Committee recommended, inter alia: Allocation of sports grounds for winter season. Report of Curator recommended for adoption—the condition that rent must be paid before the grounds are used to be strictly enforced. Caroline Bay—Basketball Association: Request from the Association was considered for the use of the tennis courts during the winter months. The charge last year was £2 a court with permission to take up a collection from onlookers on Saturday afternoons. Electricity—The Association pays £5 lor the season for hire of lighting plus cost of current and lamp replacements. —Resolved that application be approved on the same terms as last year.

Scheme 13.—The Department of Labour’s circular was considered and it was resolved that the forms be completed for the following works: Caroline Bay, Centennial Park and Park Avenue on the understanding that full subsidy is granted. Children’s Playground, Church Street. —Complaints were received as to noise and trespass by the children on properties adjoining. Instructions were given that a brushwood fence be erected at the back of the reserve. Women’s Community Centre. —Recommended that a four inch kerb be placed between the footpath and the section.

Centennial Park. —Report to be made on an engraved stone commemorating the planting of trees in Centennial Park.

The reports were adopted. The meeting was attended by the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, and Crs. J. S. Satterthwaite, H. J. Mathers, P. B. Foote. F. B. Hawkey, M. H. Richards and A. S. Kinsman.
