FAIRLIE BOWLING

Competitions Finished Successful Season For Club C. D. Boulter successfully defended his title in the singles championship of the Fairlie Bowling Club when he defeated H. Carlton in the final by 14 points to 13. The competitions have now finished and it is expected that the season will be officially closed next Saturday. The season has been a successful one for the Club in every way. In its outside matches it has done well, and the standard of play generally has been good. H. Carlton, a prominent member of the Club, won the champion of champion singles title and the Christmas tournament singles title of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre. The most successful performer in the women’s club has been Mrs P. Carlton, who won the champion and handicap singles and with Miss B. Redditt the handicap doubles. She was runner up for the Cunneen trophy with Mrs J. MacDonald. Mrs Carlton was also runner-up in the champion of champion singles of the Canterbury Women’s Bowling Centre in Timaru. Results of the concluding matches in the competition were:— Men’s Events Champion Singles- Sixth round: C D. Boulter beat H. Carlton; A. Pryde beat J. Caskey. Seventh round: Boulter a bye; Carlton beat Pryde. Final: C. D. Boulter beat H. Carlton. Champion Doubles—Fifth round: W J. Whitehead (s) and A. Cooper a bye; C. Stamp (s) and C. Reynolds beat H. Bateman (s) and H. Black; H. Carlton (s) and J. Forrester beat C. D. Boulter (s) and G. Cogar. Sixth round: Carlton and Forrester a bye; Stamp and Reynolds beat Whitehead and Cooper. Final: Stamp and Reynolds beat Carlton and Forrester. Handicap Singles—Final: H. H. Wall (2) beat C. Stamp <4). Handicap Doubles —Semi-final: H Carlton (s) and E. O’Brien (3) beat W. Barwood (s) ai.d E. J. Robertson (6); C. Stamp (s) and H. Black (6) beat J. Caskey (s) and S. Ryder (6). Final: Carlton and O’Brien beat Stamp and Black. Cunneen Trophy—Final: W. J Whitehead (sj and H. Black (5) beat C. D. Boulter (s) and J. Innes (6). Colt’s Cup—Final: W. Binney beat A. J. Glover. Women’s Even's Cunneen Trophy—Final: Mrs Miles and Mrs Ryder beat Mrs Carlton and Mrs MacDonald. Handicap Doubles—Mrs P. Carlton (s) and Miss Redditt (3) won the competition with four wins. CATTLE VALLEY The rainfall in March at Cattle Valley was .84 inches, making the total for the year 7.96in5. Rain fell on seven days. The highest maximum temperature was 88 degrees on March 15 and the lowest minim r- (not ground) was 33 degrees on March 27. The average mean temperature for the month was 57 degrees, the same as for the corresponding month last year Although the average mean temperature was the same in comparison with March, 1939, the average maximum was two degrees higher and the average minimum two degrees lower this year. Red Cross Cert’..cates The certificates for successful candidates in the home nursing examination conducted by the Fairlie SubCentre of the Red Cross Society are t hand and will bv presented at the annual meeting of the Sub-Centre to-night. TELEPHONE CABLE FOULED Telephone communications were interrupted when the ditching machine working on the Fairlie water supply scheme fouled the cable a short distance above Fairlie.
