WEATHER CAUSES POSTPONEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, February 10. The New Zealand amateur swimming championships opened at the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, this morning, before a fair attendance. The water was at 65 degrees. Results:— Men’s 100 yards—First heat: P. Hanan (Auckland) 1, J. T. Clark (Wellington) 2. H. G. Goldsmith (Canterbury) 3. Won by four feet, a touch between second and third. Time 56 4-ssecs. Second heat: R. Hatchwell (Wellington) 1, J. Whiti (Bay of Plenty) 2, D. H. Symes (Canterbury) 3. Won by a length, a foot between second and third. Time 56 l-ssecs. Men’s 220 Yards Breaststroke—First heat: H. Dyson (Otago) 1, K. Shaw (Southland) 2, K. Spry (Wellington) 3. Length. Time 3min 1 3-ssecs. Second heat: S. Thomson (Hawke’s Bay) 1, M. Shanahan (Auckland) 2, R. Geddes (Otago) 3. Won by a length. Robertson (Wellington) finished third, but was disqualified. Geddes was well back. Time 3min 13 l-ssecs.

A scratch 100 yards freestyle race, held to decide who will fill the last position in the Wellington flying squadron, was won by E. A. Raven, in 62secs.

Water Polo Championship—Wellington B 0, Canterbury 0. Because of the strong southerly and heavy rain which sprang up in the afternoon the events set down for the evening were postponed till Tuesday night.

ANNETTE KELLERMAN CUP

J. C. BLAKELEY THE WINNER By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. February 11. The Annette Kellerman Cup harbour swim was held this afternoon. Conditions were good but the water was cold, the temperature being only 60 degrees. A large crowd watched J. C. Blakeley (Wellington), win in a thrilling finish with P. Malthus (Wellington) over the last lap. Both kept together to within 30 yards of the finishing point when Blakeley made a final spurt to gain a length on Malthus at the finish. Blakeley, who gained fastest time in this race at Lyttelton in 1934 and Dunedin in 1936 again established fastest time, taking 78min 15secs, which is regarded as the fastest time ever recorded in the race. There were 24 starters, 16 finishing. The third man. C. Kidd (Otago) was about 40 yards away, three yards in front of P. Ryan (Hawera). The others were well back. The adjusted finishing times and order in which the competitors finished were:—
