BOWLING CHAMPION FOURS

West End Have Two Lives Kia Toa Have Close Call The South Canterbury Centre’s annual champion of champion fours competition for the Vinnell Memorial Cup was commenced on the West End green on Saturday. Eleven clubs were represented, and in order to übviate a bye, Kia Toa, holders of the championship, were permitted to enter a second team. The green was in splendid order early in the day, but later heavy rain took the sting out of the green.. Play was not interrupted to any great extent, and during the day four games were played. Four teams were left in at the end of the day, West End having two lives, and Kia Toa (holders), Pleasant Point and Temuka one life. Kia Toa lost one life to West End, who played well all day. The holders also had a veryclose call in their last game against Geraldine. When the last head commenced, Geraldine were two up, but Kia Toa notched two, necessitating the playing of an extra head. On this Kia Toa also scored and won, Geraldine thus being eliminated.

The first round in the morning produced fairly comfortable wins with the exception of the Geraldine-Temuka game, in which Geraldine scored a one-point win over a very strong Temuka four. Temuka started well, leading five to two after four heads, but they then conceded two, four and two, to be five down. A three on the next to Edw’ards reduced the gap, but Geraldine scored a very handy five on the ninth head to place them seven up. Temuka came with a late run. and when the last head commenced they required three to tie and four to win. They could notch two only, and so went under by one point. The young Pleasant Point Club scored a comfortable victory over Waimate in the first round, and proved too good for Ashbury in the second round. They had a spell in the next round, being lucky enough to draw the bye. The closest game in the second round was between West End and Geraldine, the former prevailing by the odd point. Geraldine were in front most of the way, but West End drew level with a few heads to go and

managed to hold the lead over the final head. j Detailed scores:— I First Game Ashbury—Manning, Scales, Hamlyn, Clark (s) 22; Kia Toa—Berry, Bradley, Crisp. Latimer (s) 11.
