ATHLETICS SOUTH CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS
ONE RECORD BROKEN JOHNS’ GOOD THREE MILES Rain on Saturday morning spoiled the attendance at the South Canterbury amateur athletic championship meeting at the Temuka Domain. Shortly before the commencement of the meeting in the early afternoon the sky cleared and good conditions prevailed. The track was in good order and barely holding. A. E. Redmond established a South Canterbury record by throwing the discus 125 ft 3in. C. Johns ran a fine race in the three miles. He was unpaced over the last mile and a half, but in spite of this he established an unofficial record of 15min 49 4-ssec. He was clocked by only one watch, where-
as three are necessary before a record will be recognised. The Champion Challenge Cup, which is awarded for the competitor scoring most points in the championships, was won by S. Allom, who performed particularly well in the field events. The Orr-Walker Cup for inter-club competitions was won by the South Canterbury Club. W. Watson annexed the 880 yards Championship Cup, after running a well-judged race to beat his teammate J. Spillane. In making the presentation of trophies the Deputy Mayor, Mr W. H. McMillan, congratulated the competitors and said that when it was decided to allocate the meeting to Temuka, the Domain Board and the officials of the local club had left no stone unturned to make the sports successful. The weather had interfered with their plans, but they were sure that Temuka would not be overlooked when the venue of future championships was being discussed. The president of the South Canterbury Centre, Mr H. Preston, congratulated the Temuka officials on the efficient manner in which they had controlled the meeting. The plan had worked according to schedule and in tome cases they were just a little ahead of the stated starting time. Results:— Championship Events 100 Yards—J. Sinclair (S.C.) 1, E.
