FAIR TO FINE Special to •• The Timaru Herald ’ WELLINGTON, February 9. Winds —A temporary change to strong west or north-west winds reaching gale force in exposed positions. Weather —Fair to fine, temperatures mild to warm with north-westerly change. Seas —Moderate. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation The situation remains practically unchanged. Pressure is high to the north and west and very low to the south oi Chatham Islands. Foreca: ’. Winds —Strong westerlies to southwesterlies reaching gale force at times in exposed positions from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southwards. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Moderate inshore on parts of the East Coast, otherwise rough to very rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southwesterly winds to gale and very rough seas.

Weather —Fair to fine east of the main ranges, elsewhere still changeable with occasional showers, but more especially in western and far southern areas of the South Island where heavier falls are likely. Temperatures will be cool in the south, with further snow in the mountains; moderate to mild elsewhere.

IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: The weather yesterday was cloudy but fine and warm all day, with a south-west breeze. The maximum temperature was 67.7 degrees. The barometer at 7 p.m. was 29.57 inches, and was rising slightly. Fairlie: There was a strong wind yesterday morning but the afternoon was fairly calm and mild. Geraldine: Bright sunshine prevailed yesterday with slight nor’-westerly breeze. Temuka: Yesterday was sunny with a strong south-easterty wind. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees and the minimum 52. The glass was steady last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 69.5; minimum, 54.0; grass minimum, 44.0; wind, S.W.; frost, nil; rain, nil; sunshine, 5 hours 36 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in the last 24 hours, 230 miles. Yesterday was fairly warm, with a gusty wind throughout the day. Dunedin: The sun shone intermittently yesterday. There was a strong breeze from the south-west which fell away towards evening when the barometer was rising at 29.50 inches. The maximum temperature was 65 degrees.
