BY BAG OR TON?
Chaffcutting System
Change Desired
South Canterbury is the only district in New Zealand cutting chaff by the bag instead of by the ton, said Mr W. H. Orbell at a meeting of the Timaru A. and P. Association yesterday in urging that the Association move to bring about a change in the system.
Mr Orbell said that in his opinion cutting by the bag and pressing the chaff to get as much for their money as possible tended to damage the bags and spoil the chaff. They obtained two to three more bags to the ton, but when cut by the ton the chaff kept better and longer. A further consideration, he continued, was that in a short time there would be no more 48-inch bags. What would the position be when farmers had to use 46inch sacks? He moved that the Association approach other South Canterbury primary producing organisations with a view to securing a change from a bag to a ton basis. Mr C. Ley said that opinion among farmers was fairly well divided on the point. A remit from Pleasant Point recommending a change had been turned down by a number of branches of the Farmers’ Union.
The meeting decided to refer the question to the Joint Standing Committee together with a recommendation made by Mr T. R. Rhodes that the price of wheat for the following season be announced as soon as possible.
