SQUALLY Specla' to “The Timaru Herald' WELLINGTON, February 8. Winds—Strong winds from a westerly quarter reaching gale force at times. Weather—Squa’ly with showers in the ranges but otherwise mainly fair; temperatures moderate to mild. Sea—Rough off shore. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation An extensive anti-cyclone with its axis lying north-east south-west, is centred over south-eastern Australia. Pressure is very low south of the Chatham Islands. Forecac t Winds—From a westerly quarter with south-westerlies predominating over the South Island, fresh to strong generally and of gale force at times in many places south of Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. Seas (New Zealnd waters)—Moderate inshore north of Banks Peninsula, otherwise rough to high. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southwesterly winds to gales and very rough seas. Weather—Mainly fair to fine though boisterous east of the ranges; elsewhere squally and changeable with occasional showers, particularly in the western and far southern areas of the South Island where some thunderstorms are likely; temperatures cool in the south, mild elsewhere. Sunshine—s. 4 hours. Sunshine to date this year—249.9shrs. Sunshine to date last year—279.3ohrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: A high north-west wind blew all day with warm sunshine. The sky became overcast late in the day. The maximum- temperature was 69.9 degrees. Barometer at 7 p.m. recorded 29.25 inches (990.5 millibars). Geraldine: Yesterday was sunny with a strong northerly wind. Conditions changed to overcast in the afternoon, but no rain fell. Fairlie: Yesterday was cold and windy.

Temuka: Yesterday was sunny with a westerly wind of gale force. The maxim- m temperature was 70 degrees and the minimum 43. The glass was falling last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 28.6; maximum, 72; minimum, 48; grass minimum, 44; wind, calm; rain, 3pts; bright sunshine, 8 hours 54 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours. 288. Yesterday was overcast with gusty nor’-west winds.

Dunedin: A strong south-west wind prevailed yesterday and the sky was overcast. Temperatures were cool, the maximum being 58 degrees. The barometer fell to 29.09 inches (985 millibars) but tended to rise towards evening.
