GOLD FOR COPPER
Soviet Freighter’s Mission
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 8, 11.30 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, February 8. Speculation as to whether Manzanillo, Mexico, will permit the transshipment of American copper destined for Germany via the trans-Siberian railway was renewed to-day when the Soviet freighter Kim landed 5,600.000 dollars worth of bar gold and announced that she was sailing from Manzanillo to-morrow with a load of copper for Vladivostock. The gold was
the Kim's sole cargo. She had a secret passage across the Pacific. The gold is consigned to the Chase National Bank, the local officers of which state that they knew nothing of the shipment nor what it was to buy. The Russian Consulate arranged for the guns of the United States coastguard patrol boat to ’be trained on the gangways. Scores of armed police and coastguardsmen surrounded the pier during the four hour transfer to armoured Cars.
