Four More Yesterday

Now 589

Four enlistments received at the Timaru Defence Office yesterday bring the number of South Canterbury recruits for the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force to 589. Those enlisting yesterday were J. W. Rolleston, V. J. Gardiner, J. B. Johnston and W. J. O'Neill.

Twenty-two recruits were examined at a sitting of the Medical Board yesterday. Seventeen were passed as fit and five as permanently unfit. DOMINION FIGURES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. February 8. Dominion enlistments to February 3 total 26.141, of which 17,701 were passed as fit and 13.759 were sent to camp. After deductions for reserved occupations, etc., the balance available for posting is 2102. ENGINEER JOINS UP One of the Public Works Department’s engineers who have enlisted for overseas service is Mr W. F. Young, engineer in charge of the southern section of the South Island main trunk railway construction job. Mr Young has been stationed at Oarc and Parngssus for the last few years, and is a most popular officer. More than 50 engineers in key positions in the Public Works Department have now enlisted, the majority in the special construction company called for some time ago. RECRUITING RALLY By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN. February 8. A recruiting rally at the Town Hall last evening, addressed by Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., and Lieut.-Colonel Falconer, attracted over 3000 people to the meeting. Five aeroplanes from Taieri dropped 10,000 leaflets over the city. The recruiting vans on parade obtained only seven enlistments in the street, but the effect of the rally is expected to materialise in the next few days at the enlistment headquarters. MEDICAL APPOINTMENT Coionel Sir Hugh Acland, C.M.G., C.8.E., has been appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services in the Southern Military District in succession to Colonel A. C. McKillop, who Bas been appointed to command the Ist General Hospital. Sir Hugh has already served in two wars. POSTED TO UNITS Men who have been posted to the Ist Convalescent Hospital and Ist N.Z. General Hospital at Trentham will leave on Tuesday; and those for the Railway Construction and Maintenance Company, for Bumlv*n on Wednesday. The names are:— Hospital Units From Timaru —Brooks, L. H.
