SOUTHERN MEETINGS

Special to “ The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, February 7.

Riccarton stable will have a good team at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. The nominations from this end include Defaulter, Capricious, The Dictator, Paper Slipper, Counterblast, Great Swoop, Shikari, Scold, Sovereign Lady, Stylosa, Willie Win, Scarteen, Retrogression, Kight Dress, Crack o’ Dawn, Settlement, Prudent Prince, Disdain, Doria, Allas, Couhterlunch and Garonne. Counterlunch and Garonne went south this morning to race at Gore on Saturday and Monday, the intention being to do the Winton and Dunedin mebtihgs also before they return home. They look well, but Counterlunch, who has had a rest since she raced in November, should improve as the trip progresses.

R. J. Mackie will ride Garonne at Gore, where C. T. WiLson will be on Counterlunch. J. W. Jennings has been engaged for Wild Career, Rodeur, The Joker, Night Pal and New Note. The Lord Warden-Pleasant Memory two-year-old in A. McMullan’s stable has had the name Reprieve claimed for him. Though he has not been long in work, He is coming on nicely and he may have his first race at Hokitika this month. Skyrena has resumed work and she looks ih good health after her short rest. She is booked for an autumn trip to the West Coast circuit.

St. Cloud is striding along in strong work and she should be an improved mare when next she races, which may be at Trentham next month, with Riccarton to follow at Easter. She has always had speed and she looks as if she was gaining stamina with age. A. S. Ellis has started Patuma on his education as a jumper. He shapes well and he may be ready for a race over hurdles at Easter.
