PAPAL LEGATE
MESSAGE TO NEW ZEALAND By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 23. "I am delighted to be again in New Zealand and to enjoy once more the well-known hospitality of New Zealand people,” says the Papal Legate, Archbishop Panico, in a message to New Zealand. “The Catholic celebrations will be a cordial participation in the commemoration of the centenary, and I am sure they will be among the outstanding features of an historic event.” He said he was enchanted with the scenic beauty of the harbour surrounding him on his arrival, and all seemed a happy augury of a new century already at the dawn for this fine Dominion. •‘I noted with pleasure the presence of the gaily decorated flotilla of boats flying the Papal flag as Wellington’s first welcome to the personal representative of Pope Pius XII,” he added. “I gladly take this happy opportunity courteously provided by the ‘Evening Post’ of extending my first and deeply cordial greetings as Papal Legate to the people of New Zealand.” He was given a liturgical reception at the Church of St. Mary of the Angels and afterwards was driven to the residence of Mrs lan Duncan, which he will occupy during his residence in Wellington. He called on the Governor-General (Lord Galway) today and the diplomatic exchanges customary with Sovereign States will also be observed.
