CRICKET LOW SCORING GENERAL

Exception Provided By Old Boys Fairview Surprise Timaru Low scoring was general in the South Canterbury Cricket Association's senior competition matches on Saturday, Old Boys with the useful total of 231 runs against Temuka, being the only team that made more than 100 runs in an innings. Temuka lost seven wickets for 71 runs so that Old Boys are in a strong position. Star is certain of a win against Geraldine. The big surprise of the day was sprung by Fairview. After making 66, their bowlers, W. Stevens and C. Rogers came to light and dismissed Timaru for only 55, leaving the newly promoted team 11 runs in the lead on the first Innings. Part of the reason for the success of the bowlers was the excellent fielding of the Fairview slayers. OLD BOYS LEAD TEMUKA STARTS BADLY Old Boys made an exceedingly good etart against Temuka at the Temuka oval on Saturday. After compiling 231

runs, the visitors made use of the remaining hour to collect seven Temuka wickets for 71 runs. Scores:— OLD BOYS First Innings. DISMAL BATTING TIMARU ROUTED BY FAIRVIEW Dismal batting by both teams and fine bowling performances by W. Stevens and C. Rogers marked the match between Fairview and Timaru at Timaru Park. The wicket played fairly well, but throughout the day the bowlers were on top. Fairview made 66 and as a result of poor batting Timaru finished 11 runs behind on the first innings. J. Donaldson was the only Fairview batsman to make a stand against the bowling of Nicholls, Smith, Wilson and Gould. By watching the ball and taking no chances Donaldson kept the bowling out and gained runs slowly, but his team mates failed to make an Impression. In his first five overs Nicholls took one wicket and gave away only one run, and he finished with three wickets for seven runs. Although neither W. Stevens nor C. Rogers appeared to be particularly dangerous they had the Timaru batsmen in trouble from the start, and wickets fell steadily, the only stand being made by L. Smith and R. Wilson, who added 31 together. The others failed completely. Stevens bowled at a little above medium pace and gained an awward lift from the wicket but he did not turn to any extent. He sent down few loose balls and was always bowling for the wicket. Rogers bowled a number of full tosses and had the batsmen dealt with half of them as they should have done Timaru would not have been behind on the first innings.

The feature of the day's play was the fielding, especially that of the Fairview players. Not a chance was given the batsmen and with the field well placed and on its toes runs were not easy to make. Timaru also fielded well but in Fairview’s second innings chances were not accepted when wickets were badly wanted. It was then that J. Donaldson and R. Stevens made a fine stand for 31 after three wickets had fallen for 11 runs. Scores: FAIRVIEW First Innings. A. Gillett, run out 7 P. Kent, b Smith 0 W. Purdom, b Nicholls 5 W. TAYLOR BOWLS WELL STAR IN WINNING POSITION Mainly because of a brilliant bowling effort by R. Taylor, who during the afternoon took 12 wickets for 33 runs, Star is in a winning position against Geraldine in a match marked by low scoring. The wicket was very tricky and everything was in favour of the bowlers. Geraldine made 42 and 52 for seven wickets and Star made 72. Batting first Geraldine were acutely uncomfortable against Taylor and Seaton, whose pace was difficult on a wicket on which the ball shot and bumped in a bewildering manner. Williams made a good stand for 16 which included two boundaries through the slow outfield. Star fared little better at the beginning of its innings, but Boyd watched the ball closely, hit hard when the opportunity arose and made a valuable 23. Later men added a few and Star gained a lead of 30 which will be invaluable as runs will not be easy on the wicket. F. Stack bowled well during 13 overs to take four wickets for 27 runs and Gibson, who came on late, bowled five overs for eight runs and three wickets. The early Geraldine batsmen gave a better display in the second innings, E. Scott making double figures and F. Stack batting well for 24, which included three fours. R. Gibson gave him valuable support. Taylor again had all the batsmen in trouble while Seaton was always dangerous at the other end. Scores:— GERALDINE First Innings. F. Stack, b Taylor 6 C.
