KNITTING FOR RED CROSS

APPROVED PATTERNS The following patterns have been approved by the Depot Committee of the Timaru Centre o fthe Red Cross: — MITTENS Four No., 11 needles and 2 skeins of Timaru wool. Worked at a tension of 7 stitches to 1 inch. Cast on 52 stitches, 18 on each of two needles and 16 on a third. Work in rib of (K 2, P. 2) for 36 rounds. Work 10 rounds in plain knitting. 47th round —Commencing the Thumb, P. 1. increase once in the next stitch. K. 2, increase once in the next stitch, P. 1, knit to the end of the round (the 2 purled stitches mark the outside of the Thumb). ♦ Knit 2 rounds plain, but purl the stitches which were purled in the previous round. 50th round. —Increase once on the inside of each of the purled stitches, knit plain to the end of the round ♦. Repeat from * to * until there are 18 stitches between the 2 purled stitches. Knit 2 more rounds without increasing. In the next round K.l (the purled stitch), slip the next 18 stitches on to a thread and leave for the Thumb, cast on 4 stitches after the K. 1, knit to the end of the round. Work 10 rounds in plain knitting. Work 10 rounds in rib of (K. 2, P. 2). Cast off loosely. The Thumb.—Take up the 18 stitches which were left on the thread and divide them on to two needles; with the third needle knit up 6 stitches along space between the two needles. Knit 6 rounds plain. Work 6 rounds in rib of (K. 2, P. 2). Cast off loosely. Work another Mitten in the same manner.

BALACLAVA TIMARU WOOL Set of 4 No. 8 needles. Cast on 100 stitches, 36 on the first needle an.d 32 on each of the second and third needles. Ist round.—* K.2, P.2., repeat from * to the end of the round. Repeat the Ist round for 10 inches. To make the opening for the face, in the next round, K.2, cast off 22 stitches, continue in pattern to the end of the round. Shape for the crown as follows: Ist round, —* K. 18, K.2 tog., repeat from * to the end of the round. 2nd and alternate rounds.—Knit plain. 3rd round.— * K. 17, K.2 tog., repeat from * to the end of the round. sth round.— * K. 16, K.2 tog., repeat from * to the end of the round. Continue in this manner, decreasing in every altlernate round, until 25 stitches remain. Break off the wool and run the end through the remaining draw up. and fasten off With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

SOX PATTERN FOR TIMARU WOOL 4 No. 11 needles. Work at a tension to produce 7 stitches to the inch. Cast on 66 stitches and work 4 inches in a rib of 1 plain 1 purl. Work 2 inches in plain knitting. In the next round K.l, K.2 tog., knit plain to the last 3 stitches of round. K.2 tog., K.l. Repeat decrease every 10 rounds until you have 58 stitches on needles. Continue in plain knitting until your work measures 11 inches from cast on edge. Knit the first 15 stitches of the round on to one needle. Slip the last 15 stitches of the round on to the same needle (these 30 stitches are for the heel). Work on heel stitches as follows: Ist row.— * Slip 1, purl 1, *repeat from * to * to last stitch. 2nd row.—Slip 1, knit to last stitch. 3rd row.—Slip 1, P.2, * slip 1 P.l * repeat from * to * to last stitch. 4th row.—Slip 1, knit to last stitch. Repeat these 4 rows 7 times, and then Ist and 2nd row once. To Turn Heel Slip 1, P. 16, P.2 tog.. P.l, turn. Slip 1, K. 5, K.2 tog., K.l, turn. Continue in this manner knitting the 2 stitches together on either side of gap, which can be clearly seen, until you have all stitches on one needle ending with a plain row (18 stitches). Pick up and knit 18 loops down side of heel flap. Knit 28 across front on to one needle and then pick up and knit 18 loops on other side of heel flap and Ist 9 stitches of heel. Slip other 9 stitches on to other back needle. Continue in plain knitting decreasing 1 every other row at front edge of back needles until you have 17 stitches on each back needle and then decrease every 3rd row until you have 14 stitches on each back needle (56 stitches). Continue in plain knitting until the foot measures 6i inches, 7 inches or inches from the edge of heel flap. (7 inches makes an 11 inch foot). Shape for the Toe On the front needle K.l, K.2 tog., knit to last 3 stitches, K.2 tog., K.l. 2nd needle: K.l, K.2 tog., knit to last stitches. 3rd needle: knit to last 3 stitches, K.2 tog., K.l. Work 1 round without shaping. Repeat last 2 rounds until you have 16 stitches. Slip back stitches on to one needle and graft.

GRAFTING Divide the stitches equally on two needles, with th? wool at one end and with the right side of the work facing. Break off the wool, leaving a length of several inches, and thread this with a wool needle. * Inserting the wool needle, as if for knitting, into the first stitch of the front needle, draw it through the stitch and slip the latter off the needle; inserting the needle, as if for purling, into the second stitch of the front needle, draw the wool through and let the stitch remain on the needle; taking the wool under the front needle and inserting the wool needle, as if for uurling, into the first stitch of the back needle, draw the wool through this stitch and slip the latter off the needle; inserting the

needle, as if for knitting, into the second stitch of the back needle, draw the wool through and let the stitch remain on the needle; bring the wool forward under the needle and repeat from * until all the stitches are worked off. darning in the end of the wool securely when finished. SPIRAL BED SOCK Three skeins 4 ply fingering (Timaru). 4 No. 8 needles: Cast on 56 stitches and knit in rib of 2 plain, 2 purl for 2i inches. Now work in spiral rib. Ist to 3rd rounds inclusive * K. 3. P. 1 * repeat froi_. * to * to end of round. 4th to 7th rounds inclusive P. 1 * K. 3, P. 1 repeat from * to the last 3 stitches K. 3. Bth to 11th rounds inclusive K. 1. P. 1. * K. 3., P. 1. repeat from * to the last 2 stitches K. 2. 12th to 15th rounds inclusive K. 2. P. 1. * K. 3. P. 1. repeat from * to the last stitch K. 1. Repeat these 15 rounds until you have a depth of 16 inches from the cast on edge. To Shape for Toe In plain knitting K. 6. K. 2. tog. repeat to end of round. Knit 5 plain rounds, K. 5. K. 2. tog. repeat to end of round. Knit 4 plain rounds. K. 4. K. 2. tog. to end of round knit 3 plain rounds. K. 3. K. 2. tog. to end of round knit 2 plain rounds. K. 2. K. 2. tog. to end cf round knit 1 plain round. K. 1. K. 2. tog. to end of round knit 1 plain round. 14 stitches left put 7 on 1 needle and 7 on another and graft.
