BOWLING SINGLES AND FOURS

[Further Games Played Surprise Eliminations By Telegraph —Press Association WELLINGTON. January 17. The singles event of the Dominion Centennial bowling tournament was advanced a further stage this afternoon. when four of the six finalists played off. Rolls (Featherston) 22 defeated Whittaker (Onehunga) 15, and Deare (Carlton) 21 defeated J. R. Smith (Kelburn) 9. Squire (Hawera) and Spearman (Sydenham) will play their match to-morrow morning. The contest between Rolls and Whittaker was characterised by sound drawing. Whittaker secured a lead of 10-4 on the seventh end. but a three on the eighth end. singles on the ninth and tenth, and a four on the twelfth put Rolls in front with a score of 13-11. Whittaker regained the lead and took the score to 15-14 on the sixteenth. The Onehunga player failed to score thereafter, and notching 2,1, 3. 2. Rolls finished up 22-15 on the twentieth end. In spite of Deare having a fairly easy win 21-9 on the eighteenth end against Smith, the game was a very interesting one. Smith excelled with his running shots, but Deare’s deadly drawing turned the scales. Deare, who is the only two-lifer in the competition. will meet Rolls to-morrow morning. In the pcst-section rounds of the fours championship, the day was one of surprises. The weather was perfect throughout and the greens in splendid condition. The conclusion of the day’s three rounds found the number remaining in the event reduced to 22. comprising six two-lifers and sixteen one-lifers. Of the two former holders of the fours title. Naylor (Hataitai) has two lives, and Bremner (West End. Auckland) one life. Bremner went down to McCarthy (Port Ahuriri), whose fine playing throughout all three rounds was a feature of the day. McCarthy was conspicuous for his accurate drawing. He held the advantage throughout most of the game against Bremner. McCarthy’s drawing ability was seen in particular at the twentieth end when, although Bremner was lying four, he drew the shot. McCarthy also disposed of Munn (Canterbury) in the second round, and to defeat two players of such calibre is no mean feat. The Port Ahuriri team is among the two-lifers, and on to-day’s form should stand an excellent chance of j reaching the finals. Three surprise eliminations were those of Spearman (Sydenham), who went down to Russell (St. Heliers) and Bell (Tauranga), Munn (Canterbury), who suffered the second of his two defeats to Bain (Marlborough R.S.A.). and Silbery (Petone), who was vanquished by Naylor (Hataitai) and P. W. Smith (Thomdon). In the section play, Silbery, with Hadwin (Hutt) and Munn, had won all eight games. Hadwin now has one life, losing his third round to Livingstone (Onehunga). who won all his events to-day. The third round match between Naylor (Hataitai) and Hazelwood (Lyall Bay) provided a dramatic finish. Naylor required five to tie on the final end. By nice play he got the five counters, and in the extra end secured the necessary single to win 21-20. Results of to-day's play were:— FIRST ROUND Wellington Green Livingstone (Onehunga) 26.
