RAILWAY TRAFFIC

INCREASE RECORDED Contrary to expectations, the number of bookings at the Timaru Railway Station over the holiday period, from December 15 to January 15. show a marked increase over those of the corresponding period in 1938-1939. Bookings in the recent holidays totalled 6700 as compared with 4363 a year ago. and the increase in revenue amounted to £l4OO. The rise in holiday traffic is stated to have been general throughout the Dominion, and a notable feature of the bookings in Timaru was that, in spite of the Centennial Exhibition at Wellington, they extended to all points in the North Island. The Sunday excursion trains to and from Timaru have also received greater public patronage during the current season.
