TWO GIRLS DROWNED
Tragedy At Riverton ONE NOT SEEN T 3 DISAPPEAR By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, January 17. Two young girls were drowned in the Aparima river at Riverton early this afternoon. They were:— Joyce Smith, aged 16, whose parents reside in Dunedin. Marjorie Corbett, aged 16i, one of a party of 12 girls from the St. Vincent Orphanage of the Dunedin Convent of Mercy spending a holiday at Riverton. The girls were drowned near the bridge on the main road at a point where the bathing pool shelves sharply. As she stepped into deep water when paddling. Joyce Smith seized the legs of a Riverton girl who was bathing. The latter shook herself free and tried to hold Joyce, but she disappeared. The clothes of Marjorie Corbett were found on the bank, and although her movements were not seen it is thought that she went to the assistance of Joyce Smith and got into difficulties. Joyce Smith’s body was recovered late this evening. Marjorie Corbett’s was located but it cannot be recovered till the morning.
