YACHTING

Dominion Contests Auckland Wins Sanders Cup By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 17. Outsailing the other competitors in light breezes, Auckland won the third and fourth races for the Sanders Cup to-day and won the trophy. Ariki, the Canterbury representative, sailed by G. Brasell, put up a good performance to gain a first and two seconds, but the wind was too light for him to-day. Kitty (Wellington), which was expected to do well, gained only a second and a third. With heavier weather she would have done better. Wanganui won the fourth race in the Idle-Along contest, which was an excellent performance considering the little competition she has in her own waters. Wellington is still leading on points as a result of to-day’s races with 19 points, Canterbury being next with 17, Bay of Plenty third with 15 and Wanganui fourth with 14. Wanganui and Auckland, with two wins each, are leading in the Cornwell Cup contest. Wellington were expected to do well, but have only one win to their credit. They were placed eighth and ninth on Tuesday, and did not finish to-day. The skipper, E. Wagstaff, won the trophy last year, but has put up a poor performance this year in light winds. Nelson won the Tauranga championship with 416.6 points, Wellington being second with 373.2, West Coast third with 361.6 and Tauranga fourth with 331.6. Cornwell Cup The fourth Cornwell Cup race was sailed over a triangular course. At the end of the first lap Christchurch led from Auckland, Lyttelton and Wellington. The second round developed into a duel between Auckland and Christchurch, Auckland finishing 31 seconds in the lead. Christchurch later was disqualified for a breech in the tussle with Auckland. The times and placings were:—

resulted in a drifting match toward the finish, the breeze dropping away. Auckland crossed the line first, followed closely by Wanganui, with Christchurch third and Plimmerton fourth. The other competitors did not complete the course. Wellington entered a protest against Wanganui.
