LAST RITES
FUNERAL OF MR TAU HEN ARE By Telegraph—Press Association WHANGAREI. January 16 A salute of 100 rifle shots was fired over the grave by Natives when the remains of Mr Tau Henare. for 24 years member of Parliament for Northern Maori, were interred at Motatau yesterday. Undaunted by flood waters covering the narrow access road to the valley, nearly 2000 persons attended the hui. The hearse and a motor bus conveying relatives succeeded in negotiating the water, but more than 1000 mourners walked along the railway line to the cemetery gates, where a wait for an hour followed until the arrival of distinguished southern visitors on the express. Messages of condolence included one from the Hon. F. Langstone, on behalf of Cabinet, and from the Hon. A. Hamilton for the National Party. Canon Cherrington, assisted by four Native clergy, conducted the service.
