£48,000 ROAD

LONG BAY TO MILFORD Approval of the letting of the contract for the first portion of the Waitemata County Council’s new east coast road having been received from the Main Highway Board, it is expected that the contractor will make an early commencement with the work, according to the county clerk and treasurer, Mr c. A. Cawkwell. The new road, the total cost of which has been estimated at more than £48,000, will serve east coast bays from Milford to Long Bay. Although the authority for raising two loans, amounting to £14,200, was obtained by the council from the ratepayers in the Takapuna riding many months ago, the council was not able to raise the money until the interest rate was raised to 4* per cent. The treasurer has now raised sufficient to cover the council's contribution for the first section and also to provide for the early calling of tenders for the second section in the spring. For the first section, which extends for two miles to Campbell’s Bay, the contract has been let to Mr W. Smale for £7885. Most of the road will be sealed to a width of 18ft„ but the portion through Mairangi Bay will be sealed from kerb to kerb. The ratepayers’ contribution for the full length of the road, seven and a quarter miles, will be £14,200, the remaining 75 per cent being found by the Main Highways Board. The road will be completed in stages in succeeding favourable seasons. When finished it will not only give residents of the bays much better access, but will offer a valuable scenic and holiday route.
