The Germans are reported to nave brought long-range guns into action near the Luxemburg border, and the French are said to have evacuated villages as far as ten miles behind the border. A heavy artillery duel is proceeding. Luxemburg reports that the fragments struck three houses and shattered windows, but no one was hurt. Both the French and German war communiques report a quiet night on the front. A German reconnaissance aeroplane was brought down tn northern France and the crew of three were taken prisoner. Lieutenant Edward Benn Smith, the youhgest holder of the Victoria Cross in the last war, winning the distinction at the age of 19, died of wounds in France.
