GALLANT PILOT
Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross Trained At Wigram By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. January 16 Advice was received to-day of the award for gallant conduct of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Pilot Officer G. W. F. Carey, of Cnristchurch, who is now in the Royal Air Force in England and who has been engaged in patrol work over the North Sea. His father, Mr W. R. Carey, manager of the Kaiapoi Woollei Manufacturing Company. Ltd., received to-day the following cable message-“Stockton-on-Tees. January 12 “The station commander and officer commanding the squadron offer most sincere congratulations on the award to-day to your son of the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallant conduct. "Pauli. Squadron 220.” Pilot Officer Carey began his training at Wigram Aerodrome two years ago. and has been with the Royal Air Force for 12 months. At first he was stationed at Thornley, being engaged principally in navigation. Then he was navigation officer at Thornaby, and the last advice received by his family was that he was transferred to the North Sea Patrol as a pilot.
