bowling N.Z. TOURNAMENT

Fours Championship Forty-three Teams Qualify By Telegraph —Press Association WELLINGTON, January 16. Forty-three teams qualified for postsection play in the fours championship of the Dominion Centennial bowling tournament, the final section rounds being played to-day under ideal conditions. The greens were holding slightly in the morning, but after being ironed out were perfect for the afternoon play. Three rinks—Silbery (Petone), Hadwin (Hutt) and Munn • Canterbury)—went through all eight rounds without suffering defeat. The only previous Dominion fours champion holders remaining in the competition are Bremner (West End, Auckland), with seven wins, and Naylor (Hataitai), with six wins, although Munn was associated with Haworth at Wellington and H. Wilson at Dunedin in their New Zealand fours victories. Spearman (Sydenham), although he lost two rounds in the fours, has achieved an interesting performance in this year’s tournament, being among the qualifiers in the fours, pairs and singles events. Spearman, who is a former singles champion, has lost only three games out of 24 in the present tournament. In the final round of the fours to-day he lost to Smith (Te Karo) 16-21. Livingstone (Onehunga), another former Dominion singles champion, is going well in the fours event with six wins. Skips of previous title winning fours who have been eliminated this year are Porteous (Wellington), Pilkington • Hamilton), Benefield (St. John’s), Deare (now of Carlton). Wilson (Linwood) and Haworth (Canterbury). A notable defeat to-day was that of Reid (Lyall Bay), who lost his last chance of qualifying by going down to Russell (St. Heliers) 10-26. Reid, however, is still among the eight teams remaining in the pairs. Gray (Kelburn), who qualified with six wins was runner-up to Haworth for the title in 1937. One interesting match this afternoon which attracted a large gallery at the Thorndon green was between Randle (Upper Hutt) and Naylor • Hataitai). in which Rendle won by eight points. Both are well-known performers. Rendle’s latest triumph bemg the Easter fours in 1938. A feature of this tournament has been the failure of Edwards (Temuka) to Qualify in any competitions.
