STORAGE OF WHEAT

PROBLEM in AUSTRALIA To overcome difficulties that will arise if shipping irregularities continue, the Federal Government has assumed powers by new national security regulations to commandeer buildings suitable for the storage of wheat. Simultaneously, power has been taken to commandeer whatever supplies of corn sack the Wheat Board may require to store wheat pending shipment. The Minister of Commerce (Senator McLeay) believes that at one stage during the coming year as much as 100,600.000 bushels of wheat may have to be stored in Australia if ships for its export cannot be obtained. The regulations made will permit the Government to commandeer part of the storage needed without having to erect special buildings. They provide for the payment of compensation for an amount mutually agreed to between the owners of storage or the owners of corn sacks and the Wheat Board, or, in the event of a disagreement, by arbitration.
