Many Lost in Japanese Fire Fire destroyed 2000 houses in Shizuoka, Japan. Three hundred were killed. Troops are dynamiting the city to check the flames which are being driven by a gale. Road Deaths in Britain The number killed in road accidents in Britain during December was 1155, of whom 895 were killed during blackout hours. Raid on Cork Courthouse Ten men armed with revolvers raided the Cork City Courthouse. They held up the caretaker’s family, broke into the record room, and defaced the records. Three were arrested. Sabotage in Germany Reports from the German frontier state that four large factory shop fires occurred in Berlin in the past 24 hours. These are believed to be due to sabotage. Federal Minister for U.S. The Commonwealth Government has sent a request to the King to issue a commission and letters of credence for Mr R. G. Casey, an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the Commonwealth of Australia in the United States. That will be Mr Casey’s official title, although he will be known shortly at Australian Minister at Washington. Australian Shipping Committee The Commonwealth Government has appointed a committee to direct shipping activities between Australia and Britain. The decision is the sequel to the decision of the British Government to requisition all shipping. The committee will run ships on behalf of the British Government, but the management and general running of the services will remain with the shipping organisations.
