FAIRLIE MORE RAIN
Year Starts Off Well Benefit To Pastures More rain fell in Fairlie on Sunday night after a spell of fine weather in the late afternoon. During the night there were several exceptionally heavy showers. At 9 a.m. yesterday the total fall from the time the rain commenced on Saturday morning was 3.79 inches. At “Tahuna” the recording for the period was 3.90 inches. This fall gives a good start to the year’s rainfall as January is generally one of the lowest months of the year. Actually the rainfall for the week-end was equal to one quarter of the total rainfall for 1939 when just more than 15 inches were recorded. Farmers generally consider that the rain will be a great help to rape and turnip crops which are established. It will also improve pastures. FARMERS’ UNION MONTHLY MEETING HELD Very little business was done at the January meeting of the Fairlie Branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr W. M. Black presided in the absence of the president. Mr L. M. Harvey reported on the meeting of the South Canterbury Executive which was held in Timaru. It was decided to forward to the executive again a remit previously forwarded in December, 1938, concerning the derating of farmlands and to ask that consideration be given the question.
