TEMUKA LITTLE DAMAGE

Some Crops Down

Results of Week-end Rain

Little damage other than a few flattened crops and the loss of a small number of sheep after shearing in the Orton and Clandeboye districts, resulted from the week-end rain.

Reporting from Rangitata Valley, Mr G. A. Davey said that the crops were nearly ripe and the straw had been sufficiently strong to weather the storm. Shearing had been finished for some time and as far as he knew there had been no losses of sheep or lambs. According to the reading of the gauge of Mr A. J. Davey, Waitohi Flat, 3.15 inches of rain feil at the week-end. There was no evidence of damage. Root crops and pastures would benefit from the downfall. A number of oat crops had been levelled in the Clandeboye district, said Mr G. H. Mulligan. There was a deal of surface water to be seen but no flooding. Some barley crops had also been flattened, but this loss should be offset by the advantage of the rain to root crops and pastures. Quite a fair proportion of the oat crop had already been harvested. The rainfall in this district according to Mr R. Morrison was 2.7 inches, being a little more than was needed. Crops at Milford were not sufficiently heavy to suffer much damage. An odd one had been flattened and one paddock of oats had suffered badly. According to Mr W. McCully there was little evidence of damage at Seadown. There was a little surface water and on the whole the ground had absorbed the water very well.

Both the Opihi and the Temuka rivers are carrying large volumes of discoloured water and will not be fishable for some time. The Opihi which empties into the Milford Lagoon changed its course a little near the mouth. It also forced the shingle bank and there is now a sufficiently wide channel to provide adequate drainage from the lagoon to the sea. Rain commenced to fall in the borough early on Saturday and 33 points were recorded. On Sunday 137 points fell until 3.30 p.m. Until the rain ceased on Monday morning 169 points were recorded making a total of 3.39 inches.
