VALEDICTORY
BOROUGH COUNCIL FUNCTION At the conclusion of the Timaru Borough Council meeting last night, which marked the final ordinary meeting of the year, the councillors and executive officers were entertained at supper. The Deputy-Mayor, Cr. P. B. Foote, acted as chairman. The toast of “The Mayor” was entrusted to Cr. H. J. Mathers, the oldest councillor, who said that Timaru had had a long line of mayors, but he doubted whether the mayoral chair had ever had a more worthy occupant than Mr Tweedy, who was a true guide, philosopher, and friend to the councillors. In reply Mr W. G. Tweedy said that since his election as mayor he had come more closely in touch with the councillors than had been possible when he himself had been a councillor. He remarked that Timaru was fortunate in the present councillors who gave unbiased decisions and who acted entirely as their consciences dictated, and the ratepayers could not expect them to do any more than that. Cr. F. B. Hawkey, who proposed the toast of “The Council Staff” paid a tribute to the loyalty of the executive officers and staff, and the tribute was acknowledged by Mr C. H. Newcome (traffic inspector) and Mr E. A. Killick (Town Clerk). Cr. A. S. Kinsman proposed the toast of “The Press,” Mr I. Donnelly, editor of “The Timaru Herald” responding. Cr. M. H. Richards, in proposing the toast of "The Mayoress” paid a high tribute to the services rendered by Mrs Tweedy, not only in regard to her official duties but in charitable :nd patriotic work. Mr Tweedy acknowledged the tribute.
