KILLED IN ACTION

A TIMARU PILOT Acting-Flight Lieutenant Eugene John Hetherington, died as a result of air operations on December lx. according to cabled advice received on Saturday morning by his parents, Mr and Mrs J. M. Hetherington, James Street, Timaru. from the Undersecretary of State to th' British Air Ministry. The message expressed the Air Council's profound sympathy with the parents in their loss. Flight-Lieutenant Hetherington was first associated with flying when he ■ left school and was emplo; ed on the ground staff of New Zealand Airways at the Saltwater Creek aerodrome. He left there in September, 1934. when he took up a similar appointment at Mascot aerodrome, Sydney. After a

year in Australia he joined the strff of Imperial Airways at Croydon, where he passed the examination for entry into the Royal Air ”’orce. He received a short service commisison in ’ lay, 1937, and was posted to a unit at Heliopolis, Egypt. He returned to England last year and the last advice received by his parents was that he was stationed at Newmarket. Well known in Timaru. Flight Lieutenant Hetherington was educated at the Marist Brothers’ School in Timaru and was dux. Later he attended the Timaru Boys’ High School.
