WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

LYALLDAL'I Mrs W. J. McKeown presided over a fair attendance at the November meeting of the Lyalldale Women's Institute. Miss K. Bishop gave a very interesting talk on Karitane nursing and hospital conditions. Mrs McKeown's report on the - proceedings at the group meeting at Pareora was received with interest. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Thomas. Competitions resulted as follows: Premier bloom. Mrs P. e 1. Mrs Thomas 2. Mrs Pye 3. Gooseberries. Mrs Thomas 1. Coffee cake. Mrs Thomas 1. Best darn. Mrs Johnson 1. Mrs Thomas 2. Mrs McKeown 3. FAIRLIE The December meeting of the Fairlie Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs E. J. Robertson who was congratulated on her return to the chair after her illness. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mesdames S. Braddock and Hannigan in their recent bereavements. A welcome was extended to the visitors, Mrs and Miss Hall. An interesting reading on the care of the body was given by Mrs E. J. Robertson who also demonstrated Italian quilting. Mrs W. Macintosh displayed several finished articles. After afternoon tea Mrs Barton delighted members by singing several carols. A vote of thanks was accorded the singer on the motion of Mrs Goodman and carried by acclamation. A display of arts and crafts was given by Mrs A. Hall and was much appreciated by members. The president extended Christmas Greetings to all members. Christmas novelty competitions resulted as follows:—Mrs M. Fahey 1, Mrs R. Sadler 2, Miss P. Carney 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Fleming. W. Black, S. Jones and Hall. (AVE At the December meeting of the Cave Women's Institute Miss Amyes presided over a good attendance of members. ' It was arranged to hold the annual picnic at the river in January. A demonstration on the making of Victorian posys was given by Mrs McPherson. Mrs McMultrie reported on the Institute Conference held at Pleasant Point. The results of the competitions were: Cold sweet, Miss Amyes 1, Mrs Williams 2 and 3. Six roses. Mrs W. Little 1. Mrs J. Little 2. Miss Fairbank 3. Sweet peas. Miss Fairbank 1. Mrs Hart 2. Bowl of flowers. Mrs W. Little 1, Miss S. Weavers 2, Mrs McPherson 3. Christmas novelty, Miss Amyes 1, Mrs McMurtrie and Miss Weavers (equal ) 2, Miss D. Wisely 4. Premier bloom, Mrs W. Little and Miss Weavers (equal) 1. The hostesses were Mrs Wisely, Mrs Gunn, Mrs McPherson, Mrs Naughton and Miss Naughton. MORVEN Christmas novelties made by Mrs Smart, of Waimate, provided an attractive and appropriate display for the December meeting of the Morven Women’s Institute. The roll-call “My Favourite Flowering Shrub," brought forth some helpful ideas as to the medicinal and other qualities of certain shrubs. The results of the competitions were as follows: Best bloom: Mrs W. S. Hassall 1, Mrs J. Heath 2. Best rose: Mrs W. S. Hassall 1, Miss E. Baikie 2. Savoury sandwiches: Mrs H. F. Baker 1. Mrs W. Scott 2. Christmas novelty: Mrs W. Scott 1. Mrs H. F. Baker 2. After afternoon tea members took part in Red Cross activities. ARNO The older members entertained the younger members at the December meeting of the Arno Women's Institute. Final arrangements for the Christmas party were made. The roll call was “Read a Poem." Competitions held duirng the afternoon were won byMiss Gorman and Miss Olorenshaw. The motto for the day was “Christmas comes but once a year, when it comes it brings good cheer.” The hostess for the afternoon was Miss J. Thomas. An exchange of sixpenny gift parcels was held. The monthly competitions resulted: Specimen bloom: Senior. Miss Gorman 1, Miss M. Olorenshaw' 2. Junior, Miss O. Morrison 1. BURKE S PASS Mrs Scott presided over a good attendance of members at the December meeting of the Burkes Pass Women's Institute. Miss K. McKay gave a talk on “Life in the Chatham Islands.” It was decided to have the usual Christmas tree for the children at the breakup of the school. The competitions resulted as follows:—Bloom. Miss N. Mackintosh 1, Mrs Greene 2, Mrs Clarke 3. Knitted Scarf. Miss G. Mackintosh.
