NEW YEAR SPORTS

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY’S GATHERING Arrangements are now well in hand for the season’s biggest athletic gathering conducted by the South Canterbury Caledonian Society on New Year’s Day. Intense interest is being manifested in the woodchopping and sawing events which are on the programme for the first time. A great deal of trouble has been gone to in order to successfully introduce these events to the public of Timaru. Inquiries have reached the secretary from competitors as far afield as Southland so that there is every reason for the Society to feal confident that their efforts will meet with encouragement from competitors. Axemen’s events create an enormous amount of interest in all centres where it has been the custom to conduct these competitions, and the generous prize-money offered gives an idea of their importance. At the present moment at least 12 entries are assured, and a very interesting afternoon is in store for spectators. For some time runners and cyclists have been in hard training, and large entries are expected in these departments. There are many athletes of an exceptionally high-class competing round this district, as well as in Christchurch and Dunedin, and some interesting duels will result when athletes from the centres clash.

Entries are now being taken by the secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) who will gladly supply programmes to those interested.
