FLAG DAY
Nearly £2OO Raised Successful Appeal The Flag Day—the first public appeal made by the South Canterbury’ Zone Committee —proved an unI qualified success yesterday, so much so that oy 4.30 in the afternoon the full quota of flags allocated to Timaru by the Canterbury Provincial Committee had been sold out. Collectors ceased labours not because of lack of customers but because they had no more badges to offer in return for contributions. The gross proceeds of the appeal amounted to £196/17/9, and from that amount there will be only a small deduction in payment for the large flags which were sold to motorists. The organisation of the appeal was in the hands of the Mayoress (Mrs W G. Tweedy) and Mesdames C. A. Paterson and L. A. B. McAlister, while 70 helpers with boxes and badges took a hand in the collection at ten strategic points in the town. Mrs Tweedy said yesterday that she was delighted with the response received from the many who offered to assist in the sale .and with the generous response of the public. She expressed thanks to both town and country residents who had donated produce for the headquarters stall in Stafford Street, and to Mr J. T. O. Shephens who made a donation of a Christmas cake, which realised £2/10/-.
