“ The Timaru Herald,” December 15, 1879 Excitement in Port When daylight dawned yesterday morning the watchman at the Rocket Brigade Station observed that the deserted barque Glimpse, old as she was, had held to her anchor. Almost immediately after she was distinguished through the fast-driving sleet, a boat containing her crew, was seen to leave the brigantine Peerless, in whose sound hull they had taken shelter for the night, and start for her. Directly the vessel was boarded down came the ensign. The Rocket Brigade, who had been on duty all night, then ran up the signal, “Is she all right.” Half an hour afterwards the barque signalled, “Send an anchor and chain.” This was about half past five in the morning, and as the sea and wind had abated considerably, the Brigade at once took steps to obtain the ground tackle required by the Glimpse . . .

Fancy a vessel, which the underwriters consider sufficiently seaworthy to be insured up to almost her full value, being deserted in comparatively smooth water and fine weather, and with no probable prospect of founderin'.’. Yet such was done last night in the case of the Glimpse .... We may mention that all the other vessels in the roadstead, but the barque Glimpse, rode out the gale easily, and lay as snug as passible. A Rare Bird Huias are rare birds in New Zealand now, and are seldom seen in settled localities.
