SWIMMING SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE

ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre, after reviewing the carnivals of the various clubs and events in the Centre’s programme, mentions that six records were broken at the championship carnival held at the Century Baths on February 23. A feature of the meeting was the high standard of the senior men’s diving in which two competitors, K. Moffatt and J. Hardie gave splendid exhibitions. The Centre was represented at the junior and intermediate championships by R. Henry and M. Shanahan. R. Henry won the 75 yards junior boys’ breaststroke and M. Shanahan was second in the 100 yards intermediate boys’ breaststroke. J. Hardie and D. Shanahan represented the Centre at the senior national championship meeting and, though finishing unplaced, performed very creditably. Voluntary instructors from the ranks of the clubs and school staffs did invaluable work during the learn to swim campaign and as a result 1038 children and adults were taught to swim. This number reflects credit on those assisting in instruction in this campaign. The South Canterbury primary school sports were held in fine weather in the North End Baths. The shield was won for the fourth time in succession by the Waimataitai School. The certificates gained during the year were a record for the district, the number being 1119 as against 822 for the 193738 season. The following thanks are due for services rendered:—Messrs L. E. Eaton (hon. auditor), T. H. Langford (delegate New Zealand Council), S. Crerar (handicapper), and the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs W. G. Tweedy, for interest shown in all the activities of the Centre.
