LABOUR OFFER

ASSISTANCE FOR PATRIOTIC FUND No longer will the Geraldine branch of the New Zealand Labour Party continue its social activities for its own funds, but will continue to organise j functions for the purpose of raising funds for patriotic purposes. This decision was announced at the weekly euchre social conducted by the ■ branch when the president of the I social committee (Mr W. P. Tangney) I said that from that night functions I would not take place for the benefit lof the branch. The committee would continue to organise such functions, he said, and the proceeds would be hand|ed over for patriotic purposes. The ■ branch offered its services to the mayor in any shape or form he desired. Mr P. M. McKenzie, president of the branch, thanked patrons for their attendance at the functions and asked them to continue their support. He issued an appeal to all to carry on with their ordinary duties and not become alarmed. The Mayor (Mr D. C. McKechnie) thanked the committee for its decision to carry on with the functions to raise money for patriotic funds. A central fund would probably be opened soon, and it was hoped to work through existing organisations as much as possible. It wrs essential to avoid overlapping. Results of the euchre were: Women. Barrett won a special prize. RUGBY TOURNAMExNT A decision to hold the Geraldine seven a-side tournament on Saturday was made at a special meeting of the Geraldine Sports Association on ' Monday. The president (Mr J. Mell- | roy) presided. The secretary reported that entries were coming in well. Five had been | received from Christchurch and six from the Ashburton district. In view of the fact that petrol would i be issued to private car owners from next Friday, it was agreed that the closing of entries be extended till this evening. The matter of holding the annual carnival was discussed and it was agreed to hold the fixture on October 21 and to give the proceeds to the Geraldine Patrictic Fund. Mr Stanley H.
