WAIMATE MATTER OF SPELLING

Should. Teschemaker End With “s”? Early History Recalled There has bene considerable discussion in the Teschemaker district as to whether the locality’s name should end with an “s.” History does not support the application of the “s,” but nevertheless, it appears on most of the road signs leading to the district. The settlement was acquired from Mr T. J. Teschemaker, and from him it obtained its naihc. As far as historical records are concerned the “s” is only needed in the apostrophe for when reference Is made to Teschemaker's Valley Road, it is used. The Teschemaker settlement has its eastern boundary seven miles from the Makikihi and Otaio railway stations. The original block consisted i of 3G25 acres, and was acquired from Mr T. J. Teschemaker and let on renewable lease on March 20. 1915, in 11 sections ranging from 232 to 989 acres. The largest section consists of 989 acres of second class land, and lies | highest up the valley, rising to 2000 feet above sea level. The settlement is surrounded by the Kohika and Finlay Downs settlements. When it was ballotted there were 324 applications. | The controversy about the use of a final “s” in the name of the settlement would seem to be related to whether the apostrophe form is desired or not; there are many place names throughout New Zealand which have the apostrophe, even though it is sometimes redundant. NO HOARDING SUGAR BEING RATIONED > Housewives in Waimate are not hoarding foodstuffs a grocer told a representative of “The Timaru Herald” yesterday. When the international situation darkened some people evidently remembering the scarcity of sugar during the Great War, bought their sugar in bag lots, but grocers had no larger demand than that. At present sugar is being rationed and if housewives bought 121 b of the commodity last week, they would be allowed 61b this week. The rush, however, is now stated to be over. People realised that they could not acquire an enormous quantity of sugar and appeared willing to accept the rationing. The other day a man whom the grocer had never seen before asked what his chances were of obtaining “a couple of bags of sugar.” “None whatever,” was the reply. The amount of sugar available in Waimate next week will depend upon the quantity grocers can obtain. ZONING SUGGESTED DELIVERY OF GOODS By zoning the delivery of bread and goods, petrol would be saved, cost of delivery would be cheaper and the possibilities of overlapping would be eradicated, according to a suggestion made at a meeting of the Supplies Committee of the Waimate Defence and Emergency Association. Those present were: Messrs J. Bitchener, A. Lyall, C. Jones, W. T. Cottee, N. Hodges, J. K. Denholm. J. B. Sinclair, W. D. Paterson, G. 13. Turnbull, E. B. Wright, J. S. McKenzie, H. Compton, J. Barrie and S. Grut. Mr J. Bitchener was appointed chairman and Mr L. J. Collins honorary secretary, and Messrs H. Morland, de Joux, D. Watson and Reg. Moore were added to the committee. Following a general discussion it was decided to leave the issuing of sugar to the discretion of grocers in the meantime. The committee passed a recommendation to all grocers to obtain information from wholesalers of grocery linos regarding those commodities which were likely to be in short supply. The committee decided to obtain a list of foodstuffs and imported goods that it was thought might be rationed. Il was decided that in the event of an emergency the committee should recommend that the Law and Order , Committee should supply a patrol numbering up to 30 men for carrying out all its duties.
