OBITUARY
MRS F. CARGILL Friends in many parts of the South Island, especially in Dunedin, Timaru, and Christchurch will ICam with deep regret of the death of Mrs Margaret Rose Cargill, widow of Mr F. Cargill, and a member of a well-known Canterbury family. Mrs Cargill was born in Christchurch in 1862, her parents’ home being on the site where the Christchurch Girls’ High School now stands. She was the youngest child of Dr and Mrs Stedman, both of whom died before she was two years old. She spent some of her childhood in Christchurch and Hokitika, and at the age of 18 years went to Timaru. In 1887 she was married to Mr Frederick Cargill, a grandson of the late Captain Cargill, the first Superintendent of Otago. Her husband died in 1895, and in 1906 Mrs Cargill and her family moved to Christchurch, where she lived until her death. Possessed of rare qualities of mind and spirit, Mrs Cargill was always alert and interested and her brightness of intellect and keenness of wit kept her in touch with persons of three generations. A gallant woman, she faced life and its vicissitudes with
dauntless courage that won the affection and loyalty of many friends and the admiration and esteem of all who knew her. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs George Weston, Park terrace. Her only son and a daughter died several years ago.
