NEWS AND NOTES

At the Scottish Hall on Saturday evening the second heat of the South Canterbury waltzing championship was keenly contested. The following have been selected for the semi-final: Miss Campbell and Mr Adams, Miss D. Williams and Mr E. Eames, Mrs Campbell and Mr Griffiths senr., Mr and Mrs Pateman, Mr and Mrs Keillor, Miss G. Griffiths and Mr C. Pipson. The winners and runners-up will be the recipients of the Scottish Society’s challenge cup and miniature cups. With the object of forming a South Canterbury section of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, a public meeting is to be held in the Municipal Chambers to-night. The meeting will be attended by Mr F. S. Pope and G. S. Nicoll, president and secretary of the New Zealand Institute. The object of forming a section in the district is to co-ordinate horticultural interests, to help in the revision of the New Zealand register of judges and rules of judging with a view to securing uniformity throughout the Dominion. Efforts will also be made to interest young men in horticulture and assist them in the way of training. A short notice auction sale of the stock and fittings of a confectionery and cake business will be held on Thursday next at 322 Stafford Street (next Dominion Hotel), under instructions from Mrs M. A. Barkley, who is giving up business. Included in the list is a National cash register, two computing scales, electric bacon cutter with motor, and numerous other lines.
