Situation In China
AT present it is not possible Io say whether events ** of the past two days have worsened the situation in the Far l,ast. As tar as can be seen Hie Japanese have not modified their attitude towards the Western Powers, but from the British standpoint Die most reassuring development is the failure of the Japanese to ingratiate themselves with Hie United Stales. Bear-Admiral Yarnell, commander of the United Slates Asiatic fleet, has given an emphatic reply to the demand that an American destroyer standing by at Swatow should evacuate this treaty port, and the British reply has been to send another vessel to be in readiness to join 11.M.5. Tlianet if necessary. It seems, however, that a. testing time is near and if a graver crisis is precipitated it will be caused by Japanese recognition of failure to collect an economic dividend on the enormous outlay of the war in China. Japan's chagrin and anger should moderate in Die face of a common British and American front.
