AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGES DULL DUE TO INTERNATIONAL TENSION United Pres? Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 22. 8.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 22. BRICK AND PIPE INVESTMENT, LIMITED A net profit of £28,422. compared with. £22,615 in the previous year, was earned by Consolidated Brick and Pipe Investments Ltd. for the year ended March 31. The earnings are almost entirely composed of dividends received from subsidiary companies with £7626 brought in. There is £36,048 available for distribution. The year’s dividend has been raised from 4 per cent, to 5 per cent. This requires £27,920, leaving £Bl2B to be carried forward. The directors’ report states that the trading concerns under the control of the company wrote off depreciation amounting to £19,913 last year as against £21,307 in the previous year. The total depreciation written off for the ten years since the inception of the company is £152,531. The sum of £16,808 has also been spent on repairs and replacements, compared with £13,189 hi the previous year. The average yearly amount spent in repairs since the inception of the company has been £10,316.

WOOLLEN GARMENTS The result of a remarkable series of observations, extending over two years, as to the influence of woollen underwear on the health of school children in Paris has been conveyed to the Society of Comparative Pathology of France. Flannel undergarments were issued to a proportion of children in different age groups of 12 selected kindergartens in the poorer districts of Paris and in certain rural schools for older children. The ages of the children in those experiments ranged from six to fourteen r' the rural schools. The children selected for the experiment were in general the more weakly and debilitated in the several groups. The remaining children who did not receive wool under garments served as control for the experiments. The effects of the wearing of wool (flannel) were determined primarily by comparing the average number of days’ absence from school in the two groups. The results, which were given for individual schools and then summarised as a whole, are as follows:—Total number of children in the experiments, 938; children with wool underwear, average days absent from school, 8.98; children without wool underwear, average days absent from school 21.58. The health properties of wool so remarkably demonstrated by the recent experiments in France are being closely investigated in England, under the auspices of the International Wool Secretariat at the London School of Hygiene.
