FAIRLIE STEADY RAIN

Heaviest for Some Months Light Covering of Snow Light snow, followed by heavy rain, fell in the Mackenzie Country yesterday. Monday night was overcast after j a severe frost in the morning and early yesterday Fairlie was covered with a light blanket of snow. In the early morning it began to rain heavily and this became general during the day. The heaviest snow was at the top of Burke’s Pass where there was three inches. Down towards Kimbell there was not more than an inch and a similar depth was reported at Tekapo. Steady rain fell on the clowns. At Albury more than half an inch bad fallen yesterday afternoon, bringing the total for the year to more than four inches, compared with almost 15 at the same time last year. Farmers have had a worrying time with the dry weather. Feed had been scarce and there has been a shortage of milk. The present rain is the heaviest for some months, but is too late to help the feed position. It will allow the ploughing of lee land which has been held up because of the dryness. Late last night it was still raining heavily, and most of the snow on the lower levels had disappeared.
