» Now that Gordon Robert I McKay and James Arthur I Talbot, the central figures in | one of the most remarkable f criminal cases heard before a New Zealand Court in years, . v..v,*r well-merited sentences from Mr Justice Fair, it is appropriate that reference should be made to the excellent work done by the police in Auckland in securing their conviction. The Dominion has cause to be grateful for the undemonstrative efficiency of its police force which provides New Zealanders with protection equal to, perhaps even superior to, that enjoyed by the people of other countries. It is not often that a major crime goes undetected in this country, and when it does it is largely accountable for by the fact that the perpetrator has extraordinary luck on his side, such luck that he would be able to elude all but those geniuses in crime detection who have their being only between the covers of “thriller” novels.

It is not surprising that the Government’s £4,500,000 internal loan, which was offered to investors on such attractive terms, should have been fully subscribed. The truth of the matter is that tin' flotation had to succeed in order to provide the Minister of Finance with a useful talking point in his London negotiations. His path may be eased a little now that he is able to say that New Zealanders have faith enough in their own country to invest money in it. Still, to be certain of success, the Government had to move far away from those principles which would have been approved by the left wing of the Labour Party. The loan succeeded because of the orthodoxy of its presentation to the public.
