GERALDINE RAUKAPUKA

Fire Protection Resident’s Question “What position would the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade be in if a fire occurs in Raukapuka and the property owner concerned rang for assistance and offered to contribute to the brigade’s expenses?” asked a householder of Raukapuka yesterday. The resident said he had read a report in “The Timaru Herald” where Superintendent C. C. Knight had intimated to members that advice had been received from Geraldine Borough Council stating that machines and equipment must not be taken outside the borough area. “Mr Knight and members of the brigade are to be congratulated on their efforts to promote a county service,” he said, "and it had been surprising that the matter had not received the strong support it should have.” Mention of the increasing building operations that were being carried out in Raukapuka was made by the resident, who said if a fire should break out in one of the more thickly populated streets the danger to the other homes would be great. The superintendent had mentioned that members as individuals could attend a fire outside the area and render what assistance they could, but without water and the necessary pumping equipment little could be done.
