A message from Shanghai states that the Italian and Japanese Embassies conferred regarding a plan to bring one division of Spaniards and 30,000 Italian veterans of the Spanish war to China to aid the Japanese, due to the shortage of manpower.

ENORMOUS LOSSES IN CAMPAIGN JAPANESE ESTIMATES DISPUTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 31. Chinese military authorities at Chungking estimate that Japanese casualties from the beginning of the hostilities total 870,000. They state that Japanese estimates of the Chinese casualties, issued yesterday, are grossly exaggerated. The Japanese were forced to retreat two hundred miles on the Hupeh front, where they suffered 25,000 casualties.
