PROGRESS IN BRITAIN
REPORTS ON EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES British Official Wireless (Received May 31. 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, May 30. The annual report of the Board of Education for 1938 contains evidence of continued progress. 1938 school buildings condemned as falling short of modern standards have now either been closed or the defects remedied. The number of pupils in grant-aided secondary schools reached a total of 470,000, over 80 per cent of the new entrants during the year coming direct from elementary schools. Nearly 60 per cent of the entrants were admitted free. In nutrition, there has been important developments, and the Board at present is surveying the adequacy of the provision of free meals and milk in necessitous cases. The number of elementary school children receiving free milk was 614,000, and 97,000,000 bottles of milk were distributed free. For 360 scholarships for higher education awarded last year, there were 6245 candidates.
