BRICK MONOPOLY
PROSECUTION PLANNED IN NEW SOUTH WALES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Rceived May 31, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 31. The New South Wales Government has decided to launch prosecutions under the Monopolies Act, against the Council of Brick Manufacturers, but the amending legislation necessary will be passed at once. The Government’s action is the sequel to the public inquiry into the price of bricks. The judge found that the brickmakers had combined unfairly to raise the price of bricks and had also cornered supplies. Since then there had been an insistent public demand for prosecution.
Control of Gaming The Government has also tightened up the Gaming Act, and imprisonment is now provided for second offenders. The police say that hotel and street illicit betting have almost disappeared in recent months, but telephone betting his increased and remains to be coped with.
