FAIRLIE NEW POST OFFICE WANTED
Minister Inspects the Building
Will Approach Postmaster-
General
The Fairlie Post Office was inspected yesterday by the Hon. W. Lee Martin, who is to ask the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, to visit Fairlie to inspect the building. The inspection was made after representations by a deputation from the Fairlie Citizens’ Association which for some months has been endeavouring to impress on the authorities the need for a new building in Fairlie. Recently a letter was received from Mr Jones stating that the Post Office facilities at Fairlie were considered to be adequate and rebuilding could not be considered until the claims of other centres were settled.
Mr W. A. B. Morton, president of the Citizens' Association, said that with the increasing business of the Post Office it was necessary that a more up-to-date building should be provided. The staff was handicapped by the inefficient lay out of the office. The
Postmaster’s residence was embodied in the building and this was in such a state of dilapidation that it was unfair to ask an officer of the status of postmaster to live in the quarters. He asked the Minister to look into the question and endeavour to impress on the Postmaster General the need for a new Post Office.
After inspecting the building. Mr Lee Martin agreed that it was in a bad condition and he assured the deputation that he would do all he could to encourage Mr Jones to visit Fairlie and investigate the claim that had been put forward.
