This we did, and to our surprise found that the crocodile gait was easy and pleasant, the motion being a gliding one and without jolt. We proceeded to the river into which the crocodiles immediately plunged and swimming lightly we were not even wet. The pygmies, with us as prisoners, travelled for three days and nights upon the river with occasional camps to relieve the crocodiles, and to cook food, which consisted chiefly of roast monkey which the pygmies brought down with their arrows.
